A Myanmar military contingent has detained four masons from Sanae town in Arakan State’s Ramree Township, family members told DMG.
The four men were arrested by troops stationed at a monastery in Ramree Township’s Khamoung Chay Taing Village while they were on their way to Sanae town from Ramree town at about 10 p.m. on October 9, family members said.
The arrestees have been identified as Ko Tun Myint Aung aka Khaung Chun, 28, Ko April Kyaw, 32, and Ko Han Tun, 32, from Sanae town’s Kanpyinsu Ward and Ko Aung Kyaw Win, 32, from Chinminpyin Village.
“The reason for the arrests is still unknown. We have been informed about their arrest by our relatives in Khamoung Chay Taing Village. They [the four men] were reportedly detained by the military troops deployed at the village’s monastery,” a family member of Ko April Kyaw told DMG.
Family members added that they have not been in contact with the detainees, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
Khamoung Chay Taing Village is located about two miles from Ramree town, near the Ramree-Kyaukphyu road. A military contingent has been stationed at the village’s monastery since 10 days ago, a villager said.
“Four men in a vehicle were reportedly arrested by the junta soldiers and I don’t know exactly the reason for the arrest,” the villager added.
DMG phoned Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun, a spokesman for the regime, and Col Kyaw Thura, Arakan State Minister for Security and Border Affairs, for comment on the military’s detention of four Sanae town residents, but they could not be reached.
At least 20 people in Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu Township have been arrested on suspicion by the military regime in recent months, according to a DMG tally. Of them, at least 10 people were charged under the Unlawful Associations Act or Section 505(a) of the Penal Code. According to local residents, some have not been heard from since they were detained.
