Nineteen homes caught fire and a local woman was injured in Manawthiri Village, part of Arakan State’s Pauktaw Township, on Tuesday after artillery shells fired by a junta warship landed and exploded in the village.
The injured woman has been identified as Ma Aye Aye Cho, 30. She suffered minor injuries while fleeing due to the junta shelling on December 5, said a resident of Manawthiri Village.
“She received shrapnel wounds while fleeing due to the Myanmar Navy vessel shelling on the village. She is currently receiving medical treatment at a safe place,” the resident added.
Around 200 junta soldiers also set fire to paddy bundles piled up in the fields around Manawthiri Village, according to the villagers.
“A total of 19 homes were reduced to ashes in the junta shelling. Junta soldiers also burned paddy bundles piled up at an entrance to the village,” said a villager who lost his home due to the junta attack.
Residents of Manawthiri Village have fled to safer locations due to the junta’s artillery strikes. Manawthiri Village is home to about 1,000 people across 200 households.
Additionally, a Myanmar Navy vessel intentionally fired mortar shells into Ngapyikyun Village, Pauktaw Township, injuring a local woman and destroying some homes in the village, the Three Brotherhood Alliance said in a statement on Wednesday.
The regime has yet to issue any statement regarding the incident. DMG was unable to reach junta spokesman Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun for comment.
Nearly 200 homes in Yeyoepyin and Khamaungdaw villages in Ponnagyun Township, Arakan State, were burned down by junta soldiers on December 3.
Junta artillery strikes reportedly caused a blaze at Myoma Market in Ponnagyun town on November 24 that engulfed more than 300 stalls.
