A local man from Aungthayar Ward in Minbya, Arakan State, was severely injured in a landmine blast at around 11 a.m. on July 11, according to locals.
Ko Aung Thar Chay, 22, stepped on the landmine while passing through the compound of the military’s Light Infantry Battalion No. 379 on his way to the jungle to collect bamboo shoots on Thursday.
“He stepped on a landmine while passing through the military regiment to collect bamboo shoots in the jungle. He lost one of his legs and his condition is considered life-threatening,” said a local resident in Minbya.
Although local instructions have been issued not to travel to certain areas including near Myanmar military battalions and locations where regime troops were previously stationed, landmine blasts continue to occur due to carelessness, lack of knowledge on landmine risk prevention, and livelihood difficulties.
“Locals are forbidden to visit places like military regiments. They went through the military regiment and this happened. The local government needs to effectively ban it,” said a resident of Minbya Township.
A local man from Pharpyo Village in Minbya Township was reportedly killed in a landmine explosion on July 7.
