The Myanmar military clashed fiercely with the Arakkha Army (AA) in Taungup, Arakan State, on November 15, according to locals.
The military has been clashing with the AA near the Kaingshae Bridge and Theintaung Ward in Taungup, where the regime's No. 5 Military Operations Command is based, since November 13.
"Fighting continues in downtown Taungup, with the regime carrying out airstrikes. Both armed groups need to protect the people," said a resident of Taungup.
As a result of the hostilities, residents of the town are fleeing to safer locations, though some are trapped in the middle of the fighting, unable to escape.
The regime has been carrying out airstrikes on surrounding villages as well as the area of military-AA clashes, forcing thousands of residents of Yankhaw Village to flee to various places deemed safer.
Multiple civilian casualties have been reported in Yankhaw Village as a result of the regime air assault, but DMG has not been able to independently confirm those reports.
"Four civilians were killed in the junta airstrike, forcing hundreds of locals to flee to safer locations," said a local source.
The AA has gradually surrounded the junta battalions and military camps in Taungup Township over the past several months and resumed its offensive against regime positions in Taungup in the last week of October.
Taungup is home to the No. 5 Military Operations Command, and Light Infantry Battalion Nos. 346 and 544.
The AA said on Wednesday - the one-year anniversary of the resumption of fighting between its forces and the Myanmar military in Arakan State - that it is just one step away from capturing four more towns in Arakan State; namely Taungup, Maungdaw, Ann and Gwa.
