Three Gwa Twsp men sentenced to prison for protesting military coup

A court in Gwa Township, Arakan State, sentenced three men to prison on September 27 for staging an anti-coup protest earlier this year.

The three men were identified as U Ye Khaung, U Lu Ni and Ko Aung Soe Moe, and the trio were arrested on February 11 for protesting against the military coup of February 1.

The court sentenced U Ye Khaung to two years and three months in prison under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 30 of the Natural Disaster Management Law. U Lu Ni was sentenced to two years in prison under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, and Ko Aung Soe Moe received a five-month prison term under Section 30 of the Natural Disaster Management Law, according to his family members.

“They were sentenced today. Ko Aung Soe Moe was sentenced to five months in prison under the Natural Disaster Management Law. My husband has been out on bail for three months. It is learnt that Ko Aung Soe Moe will be allowed to subtract the days he spent in police custody,” said Ma Nan Yu Khaing, the wife of Ko Aung Soe Moe.

The three men were jailed but had no appeal prospects, according to Ko Mrat Pein Soe, the son of U Lu Ni. “We have no plan to appeal for them. They have been taken to Thandwe Prison,” he said.
Former National League for Democracy (NLD) lawmaker U Min Aung and fellow party member Ko Thant Zin Phyo were sentenced to two years and two months in prison by a Taungup Township court on September 17 for protesting against the military coup.
