The Myanmar military took two men from their homes in Arakan State’s Taungup Township, where military tensions are currently running high, according to locals.

The two detainees have been identified as 52-year-old U Tun Chit from Chaungkauk Ward and U Kyaw Thaung, 42, from Hmawhintaw Ward. The two men were arrested on September 17 and 18, respectively.

Approximately 10 junta soldiers and police abducted U Tun Chit from his home, said a family member who declined to be named for security reasons.

“U Lu Lu, a 100-household head, was involved in the arrest. We were not told the reason for the arrest. We don’t know exactly his whereabouts yet,” the family member added.

Around 20 junta soldiers in a military truck came to arrest U Kyaw Thaung at about 8 p.m. on Saturday, said a source close to the detainee’s family.

“The ward administrator didn’t accompany the junta soldiers when he [U Kyaw Thaung] was arrested. I think there were around 20 junta soldiers but I don't know which regiment they are from,” the source added.

Family members said it is not yet known where the detainees were taken. When the men’s families went to their ward administrators to ask, the local officials said only that they did not know.

DMG attempted to contact Major-General Zaw Min Tun, spokesman for the regime, regarding the military’s detention of the two men in Taungup, but he could not be reached.

The junta has tightened security checks on locals after the Arakan Army (AA) attacked a support ship belonging to the military with heavy weapons in Taungup Township on September 16.
