Hearings before the Thandwe District Court in the cases of nine people charged under the Counter-Terrorism Law, which had been scheduled for June 29, were postponed due to a flareup of Covid-19 cases in the region, according to a lawyer involved in the proceedings.
“The cases were rescheduled for July 13 as coronavirus cases are on the rise in Thandwe,” said lawyer U Tin Nyo, who noted that the rising coronavirus case counts in Thandwe Township and elsewhere in Arakan State included four Thandwe District Court staff.
The four court staffers tested positive for Covid-19 on June 28, and a total of 25 confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Thandwe Township over recent days.
Ko Than Naing from Sarpyin village in Taungup Township, and Maung Gyi and Maung Ngwe from Maei town were charged under Section 50(i) of the Counter-Terrorism Law after two batteries and ammunition were found inside a cupboard in the latter’s home.
Ko Kyaw Tin Aung, Ko Htwe Maung and Ko Nay Ye Win from Chet Phouk village were charged under Section 50(i) of the Counter-Terrorism Law after a bomb was allegedly found at Ko Kyaw Tin Aung’s house.
Ko San Chit Aung and Ko Hla Than Maung from Kyetkaing village, and Ko Aung Lwin Soe from Tama village, have been charged under Section 50(i) and 50(j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law, related to allegations that involve a bomb blast in Taungup Township in 2020 and financing of the Arakan Army (AA).
The accused are currently being held in Thandwe Prison.
