The Myanmar military has reportedly arrested two residents of Muyin village in Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu Township on suspicion of having illegal ties to the Arakan Army (AA).
The two detainees have been identified as Ko Sai Wunna Kyaw, 28, and Ko Tun Tun Zaw, 20. The men were arrested near Zinchaung police station on June 24, according to family members.
“They were reportedly detained by the Myanmar military’s Kyaukphyu-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 34,” said an elder brother of Ko Sai Wunna Kyaw. “They were arrested because suspected evidence related to the Arakan Army was on their mobile phones. When we went to the police station to meet the detainees on June 25, they were taken by junta soldiers.”
A family member of Ko Tun Tun Zaw said they are worried about the safety of the detainees because they have not been allowed to see them.
“Ko Tun Tun Zaw is a student from a technological university. He was arrested while preparing to go to the university. He is not interested in politics. We are concerned for their safety because we are not allowed to see them and we don’t know their whereabouts,” she told DMG.
DMG was unable to obtain comment from Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun, spokesman for the military regime, and Colonel Kyaw Thura, Arakan State minister for security and border affairs.
U Than Hlaing and Daw Khin Ohn Ngwe from Kyaukphyu were arrested by the Myanmar military on May 26, and stand accused of raising funds for the Arakan Army.
Military tensions between the Myanmar military and Arakan Army appear to be intensifying. In response to the Arakan Army’s detention of junta soldiers and policemen, the military has arrested dozens of civilians in Arakan State in recent weeks.
