Two local women were reportedly injured in regime airstrikes in Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu and Myebon townships on Wednesday.

The injured have been identified as Daw Shwe Khin Nu, 82, from Mee Kyaung Tet Village in Kyaukphyu Township and Daw Win Win Than, 42, from Ingyin Village in Myebon Township.

“The regime fired three mortar shells into [Ingyin] Village. One of the mortar shells fell and exploded in the village, wounding a local woman,” said a resident of Myebon.

The artillery shell was reportedly fired by a junta battalion based in Ann. The injured woman is receiving medical treatment at a nearby clinic as her condition is considered life-threatening.

A mortar shell fired meanwhile by junta troops in Hnanphetaung Village, Kyaukphyu Township, fell and exploded in Mee Kyaung Tet Village on June 11, injuring the 82-year-old Daw Shwe Khin Nu.

“She sustained shrapnel wounds to her head as a mortar shell landed and exploded near her home. She is being treated,” said a local resident in Kyaukphyu Township.

Civilian casualties continue to rise in Arakan State due to airstrikes, shellings and landmines in towns and villages that the regime has lost to the AA but are still under attack by junta forces.

According to a report by the research organisation Federal Journal Myanmar, 118 civilians were killed last month in clashes, by landmines planted by regime troops, or in junta airstrikes in ethnic areas. The most civilian casualties were reported in Arakan State, where 68 deaths were recorded.
