The United League of Arakan/Arakkha Army (ULA/AA) issued a statement on December 29 saying it welcomes and will cooperate with foreign investment projects in Arakan State.
The ULA/AA has stated that it will recognise and welcome any foreign investment that benefits Arakan State and contributes to regional development, and will protect investment activities, projects, and the security of investors.
“The ULA/AA will work with these companies and also seek to establish joint ventures to ensure the continued operation of foreign investment projects in Arakan State,” the statement added.
Arakan State hosts several foreign investment projects from China, including major oil and gas pipelines, and the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone, as well as the India-funded Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project.
The AA now controls 10 out of 11 Chinese investment projects in Arakan State and has seized control of Paletwa Township in Chin State and Kyauktaw Township along the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project in Arakan State.
“The AA has now taken control of most of the townships in Arakan State. Therefore, foreign development companies investing in Arakan State should talk to the AA,” said a military and political analyst in Arakan State. “Because the AA’s offensive is in full swing, it could soon take over the entire Arakan State.”
The AA controls 14 of Arakan State’s 17 townships and is carrying out governance tasks such as administration, security, regional development and healthcare in the towns and villages under its control.
The AA has indicated that it intends to capture the remaining Sittwe, Kyaukphyu, and Manaung townships. Currently, the AA is attacking military camps in Sittwe Township, resulting in intense fighting between the military and the ethnic armed group.
