A local woman was killed and her adult daughter was injured in a junta shelling in Arakan State’s Gwa Township, where fighting between the military and Arakkha Army (AA) is ongoing and fierce.
The regime called on artillery and naval support after the military clashed with the AA in Gwa Township’s Kyaungtaung Village on November 21.
An artillery shell fired by the military fell and exploded in Kyaungtaung Village on Thursday evening, wounding Daw Nyo Nyo, 42, and killing her mother on the spot.
“An elderly woman was killed and her daughter was injured in a junta artillery strike on Kyaungtaung Village on Thursday evening,” said a local resident.
Gwa Township residents are worried about the regime’s aerial, naval and artillery strikes, along with the intense fighting between the military and AA.
“The regime is constantly firing heavy weapons, so the locals are living in insecurity because they can’t predict when danger will strike. We are afraid of not only the junta artillery attacks but also airstrikes,” said a local woman in Gwa Township.
Thousands of people who have fled their homes in Gwa Township are in urgent need of food assistance.
As the AA offensive approaches Gwa Town, the regime has reinforced its Gwa-based Light Infantry Battalion Nos. 5562 and 563, and is preparing a formidable defence.
