Residents in Arakan State’s Ponnagyun Township have called on the military to reopen the Ponnagyun-Rathedaung road, nine months into a Tatmadaw blockade of the road that was instituted citing security reasons.

The Tatmadaw must present the results of its talks with the Arakan Army (AA) to the government in order for the ethnic armed group to have its designation as a terrorist organisation rescinded, according to Dr. Myo Nyunt, a spokesman for the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD).  

A woman from Khabaw village in Kyauktaw Township, Arakan State, sustained severe injuries on January 4 after stepping on a landmine while she was heading to cut firewood with her sister east of the village, said U Kyaw Hla Htwee, the younger brother of the victim. 

The Tatmadaw has reopened roads to Darlet village-tract in Arakan State’s Ann Township that had been closed for more than a year for security reasons, allowing the overland transportation of goods starting from December 30, according to locals. 

Healthcare workers will be the first in Myanmar to be vaccinated against COVID-19, and should expect to receive the shots starting in February, State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said in a New Year’s speech to the nation on Friday. 

Four members of the Arakan Liberation Party (ALP) who were detained by the Arakan Army (AA) have been released, according to Khaing Soe Mra, a captain from the ALP.

Pad Donation Myanmar, a charity group formed by students, will provide sanitary pads for women who are sheltering at camps for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Arakan State. 

Now sheltering in camps for internally displaced people (IDPs), residents of Marlar village in Kyauktaw Township, Arakan State, have asked the local government to arrange for them to gather belongings left behind in the village. 

The release of three National League for Democracy (NLD) candidates by the Arakan Army was the result of negotiations between the Myanmar military and the ethnic armed group, the Tatmadaw True News Information Team said on January 1.

More military forces are not deployed to Arakan State because the Tatmadaw is trying to prevent further clashes with the Arakan Army, said Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun, the chairman of the Tatmadaw True News Information Team.

Three youths charged under Section 19(a) of the Peaceful Assembly Law over a human rights demonstration in the Arakan State capital earlier this month appeared before the Sittwe Township Court on December 30. 

Some internally displaced people (IDPs) who had returned home are back at the IDP camps where they were previously sheltering as they are worried about new clashes between the Tatmadaw and Arakan Army in Arakan State, residents said.  

Family members have said that the Tatmadaw abducted 18 villagers from Tinmagyi and Tinmathit villages in Kyauktaw Township, Arakan State, earlier this year. However, the military knows nothing about any arrests under those circumstances, Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun maintained at a press conference on December 30. 

The National League for Democracy (NLD) in Arakan State on Tuesday called again on the Arakan Army (AA) to immediately release three of the party’s candidates whom the armed group abducted in October.
