At least 10 civilians were reportedly injured in a junta airstrike on Minbya town, Arakan State, at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
A junta jet fighter dropped bombs on Minbya police station, township municipality office and township General Administration Department office two times. The injured people — four women and six men — are from Thabyaynyo Ward and Alepaing Ward.
“Of the injured people, five are from Thabyaynyo Ward and some are considered life-threatening. Following the junta airstrike, regime troops in Sittwe fired at least seven mortar shells into Minbya,” said a local resident.
Five homes from Minbya’s Thabyaynyo Ward were reportedly reduced to ashes by the regime airstrike.
Some local people displaced by the fighting returned home after the Arakkha Army (AA) took control of Minbya on February 6.
Since the regime relinquished Minbya town, there have been frequent, targeted bombings of civilian residences and infrastructure, including a hospital, resulting in civilian casualties.
“A few people returned home in towns held by the AA including Minbya. Most people displaced by the fighting dare not return home and are afraid of the junta airstrikes. I am not sure that the regime deliberately destroyed government offices in the AA-held towns,” said a displaced woman from Minbya.
Civilian casualties are on the rise as the regime increasingly fires heavy weapons and carries out airstrikes on towns held by the AA and towns where fighting is intensifying.
