Two local ethnic Mro men from Shwetaung Village, part of Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township, were reportedly killed after they went to a local mountain range to cut down bamboo.
The deceased have been identified as Ko Ba Than, 38, and Ko Thein Tun, 35. The pair were killed when they went to the mountains about six miles north of the village on December 18, the villagers said.
“Yesterday, the two men went to a mountain range near the village to cut down bamboo, but they didn’t come back in the evening. We searched for them and found their dead bodies,” Ko Naing Lin, a resident of Shwetaung Village, told DMG.
Villagers said Ko Ba Than and Ko Thein Tun were found with stab wounds on their bodies and necks.
Local residents are worried for their safety following the killing of the two villagers.
“Local people make a living by farming and cutting down bamboo. They are now concerned for their safety after the murder of the two men and dare not go to their farms or the mountain range,” said a Buddhist monk.
