There were 20 traffic accidents reported in Arakan State during Thingyan from April 13-16, resulting in two deaths and 20 injuries, according to the state traffic police and local social organisations.
Two men from Taungup and Sittwe were killed in traffic accidents, an official from the state traffic police told DMG.
“There were only five traffic accidents reported to the Arakan State traffic police during Thingyan. There might be more traffic accidents in other places. Traffic accidents are mainly caused by speeding,” he added.
The Shwe Yaung Myitta Foundation, a local charity in the Arakan State capital, put the figure higher, however, saying there were 23 traffic accidents reported in Sittwe alone during Thingyan, with 22 people wounded.
U Min Htel Wah, chairman of the Shwe Yaung Metta Foundation, said “most of those injured suffered from head trauma and/or broken limbs.”
Seven traffic accidents were reported on both April 13 and 14, six traffic accidents were recorded April 15 and three accidents were documented on April 16, according to the Sittwe-based charity.
Four people died and more than 20 were injured in traffic accidents in Sittwe during Thingyan last year, according to the Shwe Yaung Metta Foundation.
There were 149 road accidents for all of 2022, resulting in 84 deaths and 192 people injured, according to the state traffic police.
