Three people were injured in a traffic accident near Lawkananda Pagoda in the Arakan State capital Sittwe on Sunday. Of the three, two women were severely injured and are currently receiving medical treatment at Sittwe Hospital.
A vehicle was reportedly stopped at a traffic light at Lawkananda junction when a car crashed into it from behind at about 5 p.m. on September 24.
Daw Khin Win Than, a 33-year-old deputy staff officer from Rathedaung’s General Administration Department and Daw May Than Nu, 33, from Hsin Ku Lan Ward in Sittwe, were seriously injured in the traffic accident.
“She suffered a head injury, a broken arm and facial injuries in the accident. When she regained consciousness, she told me that her whole body hurt. The doctor said her head injury was not too serious. I want the guilty person to be punished in accordance with the law,” a family member of Daw Khin Win Than told DMG.
The other individual injured in the traffic accident has been identified as Ko Myo Naing Win, a 28-year-old man from Sittwe’s Mingan Ward. He reportedly suffered only minor injuries in the accident.
Police have identified the alleged rear-end offender as Khin Zaw Lin, 25, from Kyaukphyu. He is reported to have fled the scene of the accident, but was apprehended by police, with a case opened at the Sittwe Myoma Police Station under Sections 337, 338 and 202 of the Penal Code.
“He ran away when the accident happened, but the police arrested him when the car stopped on the side of the road due to a flat tyre,” said an official from the Arakan State traffic police. “We transferred him to the police station. According to our procedures, we have taken all measures to take action against him.”
There were more than 50 traffic accidents reported in Arakan State during the period from January through August, according to Shwe Yaung Myitta Foundation, a Sittwe-based local charity.
