One dead, two missing after boat sinks
A passenger motorboat heading to Saku Island in Rambree Township from Taunggup town sank at noon on 5 July because of heavy waves and gusty winds in Kalin Taung River, according to locals.

A passenger motorboat heading to Saku Island in Rambree Township from Taunggup town sank at noon on 5 July because of heavy waves and gusty winds in Kalin Taung River, according to locals.
Ma Hay Marn Aung, 18, was killed and Maung Nay Aung Ko, 20, and Ko Nga Sa Lone, 25 went missing after the accident.
The motorboat driven by U Thaung Tun (aka) U Kala Gyi from Wun Let Maw village in Rambree Township was carrying seven passengers, but it sank between Phaung Kha Island and Pan Tin Island, said U Nyi Thaung, administrator of Nga Tha Mote village tract.
“The boat stopped for a while when it arrived at the mouth of the river because of inclement weather conditions. The boatman decided that he could continue to the destination,” he said.
U Kala Gyi, 57, Maung Tin Ko Phyo, 15, U Maung Hla Win, 55, and U Maung Tun Nu, 50, survived the accident, he added.
People from eight villages on Saku Island have to depend only on traveling by water. So, they take risks when they travel on motorboats during bad weather.
In September 2016, a motorboat that left for Saku Island from Taunggup Town sank near Khaung Laung Tu village, six women were killed.
