Five NLD campaign signboards destroyed in Buthidaung Twsp

Five out of 40 election signboards erected for the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Arakan State’s Buthidaung Township have been destroyed, according to local party members. 

The campaign signage has been destroyed in three separate incidents and a case has been filed at the Buthidaung Myoma police station seeking to prosecute the perpetrators, said U Aung Nyein, secretary of the township NLD. 

“Campaign signboards have been destroyed three times. Two campaign signboards were destroyed yesterday,” he told DMG. “As of this morning [October 15], up to five campaign signs have been destroyed.” 

Due to armed clashes between the Tatmadaw and the AA in northern Arakan State, many villages in Buthidaung Township are uninhabited or sparsely populated, and campaign signboards have been erected primarily in downtown Buthidaung.  

Some campaign signboards for the Arakan National Party (ANP) in Taungup and Ramree townships have also been destroyed in recent weeks, and at least 10 NLD campaign signboards were destroyed in Taungup, Myebon, Manaung and Sittwe townships as well, according to the respective political parties. 

The 2020 general election is slated for November 8, with the 60-day official campaign period having kicked off on September 8.
