At least 83,746 houses have been damaged or destroyed in junta arson attacks since the February 2021 military coup, according to a report by Data for Myanmar published on Monday.
The number of homes burned down fell below 1,000 in August 2023, but has been steadily rising since December 2023, the report said.
At least 2,831 homes were reduced to ashes in March alone. Of them, 1,851 homes were from Sagaing Region and 628 were from Mandalay Region, Data for Myanmar said.
Data for Myanmar is an independent organisation that compiles data on house damage caused by regime forces and affiliated organisations since the coup.
Internally displaced people (IDPs) are still far away from returning home due to the damage to their homes during the fighting, and are facing accommodation challenges in the coming rainy season.
“We can return home, but we have no more homes. We are facing accommodation challenges as we cannot buy tarpaulin sheets to build makeshift tents,” said an IDP woman in Ponnagyun Township.
The number of IDPs fleeing fighting post-coup has reached more than 3 million across the country.
