Family members are concerned about the well-being of five Maungdaw residents detained by Myanmar’s military regime earlier this week, amid intense fighting in the township with the Arakkha Army (AA).
Three men from Tharyar Kone Village — U Maung Hla Than, U Tun Nu Sein and U Hla Tun — and two men from Magyi Kone Village, U Duuri and U Hla Than, were arrested by junta troops on Monday.
One Tharyar Kone villager said: “There was a clash near our village that day. As the junta troops withdrew, they entered our village and abducted them. We still don’t know their whereabouts.”
Junta troops also looted valuables from houses in Magyi Kone Village, according to one villager.
“They turned some houses upside down. They broke open boxes. Some villagers were robbed of gold items and money,” he said.
The regime also arrested three residents from Wimala Village (No. 3 Ward) in Maungdaw Town on May 27. Their fate is still unknown.
The AA has seized southern Maungdaw Township, and has been attacking border guard police battalions in northern Maungdaw. Facing territorial losses, the regime is increasingly targeting civilian populations with indiscriminate attacks.
