Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing discussed the junta’s plans for holding “multi-party democracy general elections” when he met outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Chen Hai in Naypyidaw on Thursday, according to junta media.

The two discussed China’s assistance for the development and peace process in Myanmar, as well as border stability, said a junta report.

“The two exchanged frank views on preparations for holding a free and fair multi-party democracy general election,” reported junta media.

The junta boss said last month that he planned for the poll next year, and is preparing to conduct a census to compile voter lists.

Observers say Min Aung Hlaing will not be able to realize his election dream due to intense fighting. Myanmar people have no trust in the junta’s proposed poll, calling it a sham.

One politician said: “It appears that the regime can hold the election only in Naypyitaw, and only soldiers and their relatives will cast a vote. There is no way it can hold polls in ethnic areas.”

Politicians say the regime is only organising a poll for show, in an effort to ease international pressures amid growing isolation.

Former Myanmar President U Thein Sein attended an event to mark the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence in Beijing on June 27.
