A senior Arakan Liberation Party (ALP) official was shot dead in the Arakan State capital Sittwe on Friday, according to sources close to the ALP.
The man has been identified as 40-year-old Khaing Saw Hmine, a major in the ALP who is responsible for dealing with theft and robbery in Sittwe.
“He is a close aide of [ALP leader] Saw Mra Razar Lin,” one source told DMG.
Khaing Saw Hmine was gunned down by unidentified motorcyclists in front of a betel shop on Kyaung Tet Lan Street at around 12 noon while he was buying betel quid, locals said.
When DMG asked ALP secretary Major Khaing Thurein about the matter, he confirmed that the person shot dead in Sittwe on Friday was an ALP member. However, he did not disclose the name or rank of the deceased.
Sittwe residents are worried about the security of the city, where the Arakan State military council is headquartered.
“While armed men are shooting each other downtown, we are worried that innocent people will be harmed,” said a local man from Kyaung Tet Lan Ward in Sittwe. “Because an ALP official was killed, we are worried that people near the scene will be arrested. There should be no shooting in downtown Sittwe.”
The military regime has tightened security and conducted security checks on locals in Sittwe following the apparent assassination of the ALP official.
ALP Brigadier-General Khaing Soe Mya, Khaing Kyaw Soe and Thurein Htet were assassinated in Sittwe’s Setyonsu Ward on January 4.
The ALP accused the Arakan Army (AA) of being behind the killings, which the Arakan Army denied.
