The Myanmar regime has been ramping up airstrikes in an attempt to recapture territories lost to resistance forces, BNI-Myanmar Peace Monitor said in a recent report.
The regime conducted 51 airstrikes across 29 townships from September 1 to 16, the report said, and carried out 118 airstrikes last month, the highest number recorded since the 2021 coup, according to the report.
"The regime is targeting to recapture towns that have been seized by the revolutionary forces, and is also accelerating aerial bombardment in townships where fighting between the revolutionary forces and the military is intense," the report said.
Myanmar's military regime continues to carry out airstrikes in Arakan State after declaring members of the Brotherhood Alliance - consisting of the Arakkha Army (AA), Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) - terrorist organisations on September 2.
The regime will respond to the revolutionary armed groups across the country as necessary, junta boss Min Aung Hlaing said during a visit to Taunggyi, Shan State, on September 3.
"The military said it would recapture the areas controlled by the ethnic armed groups, but it could not defeat the anti-regime forces and started attacking civilians. The regime often bombs civilian areas without any fighting," said a social activist in Arakan State.
Anxieties are running high among civilian populations amid an ever-increasing civilian casualty count that disproportionately affects women, children, the elderly and disabled,
"The military's actions against civilians are very terrible for women and children. In addition to raids, the military has been using heavy weapons to launch more than just airstrikes. Recently, drones have been used for bombings, which are difficult to dodge, and because they are suddenly unable to run, there are also injuries and deaths," said Ko Moe Htet Nay from Nyan Lin Thit Analytica, an independent research group monitoring Myanmar's political situation, in a recent interview with DMG.
The regime conducted 409 aerial attacks in Arakan State in the four months from January 1 to April 30 of this year, causing 1,115 civilian casualties, according to a report from Nyan Lin Thit Analytica.
