China has been holding talks with both sides amid intense fighting between the military regime and the Ta'ang National Liberation Army, according to TNLA spokeswoman Lway Yay Oo.
During an online press conference on Monday, she said the TNLA had held talks with China before planned talks with the military regime in August.
"The TNLA is set to meet with the military regime again in August, but the Chinese government has held talks with us and has also met with the military regime. The Chinese government's mediation efforts are taking a positive approach," she added.
The TNLA said that it is not yet possible to predict what will be discussed and agreed upon in the talks, as there is still some time left ahead for the next trilateral meeting between the military regime, TNLA, and China.
At a meeting in April brokered by China, the military regime demanded the return of the TNLA-controlled towns of Kyaukme, Hsipaw, Mogok, Momeik, and Nawnghkio.
The TNLA currently controls 12 towns and the ethnic armed group spokeswoman said at a press conference on May 4 that it would not cede any towns demanded by the military regime.
Fighting has been intense between the military regime and the TNLA near Nawnghkio town since the second week of June, with the former reportedly attacking the latter using ground offensives and airstrikes.
"Now, the military regime is using so many airstrikes that the fighting is intense and both sides seem to be suffering," said a local woman.
Clashes between the military and TNLA are erupting near 12 villages in Nawnghkio Township, locals said.
Due to the military regime's aircraft, drones, and artillery fire, local residents are currently fleeing their homes and in need of emergency assistance.
