Myanmar’s military junta is reportedly expanding construction of military outposts after the Arakkha Army (AA) launched an offensive against the military’s Western Command headquarters in Ann, Arakan State.

The regime set up five military outposts along Mt. Mel, between Kyeinchaung and Khamaungdaw villages, to defend its Western Command headquarters against the AA onslaught, according to a military source.

“The AA fired mortar shells into the Myanmar military’s Western Command in Ann. This is the reason why the military is secretly building military outposts to defend its Western Command headquarters against the AA onslaught,” the source explained.

Fighting between the military and AA is reported near the Western Command daily and the military has responded to the ethnic armed group’s attacks with artillery strikes on a daily basis, according to sources.

Junta soldiers at two military outposts along Mt. Mel abandoned their camps in the third week of July, said a reliable source.

“Junta soldiers at two military outposts along Mt. Mel have already retreated from their camps. The AA is currently attacking the remaining three military outposts,” the source added.

Fighting is reported in Ann Township on a daily basis and the AA clashed with the military near Hsinput Village, between Ann and Tattaung towns, on July 22.

The regime is again responding to the AA attacks with airstrikes and artillery support as it mounts a defence of the strategically important Western Command.
