A concrete rural road used by more than 10 villages in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, has been damaged for about a month, causing travel difficulties for local residents.
According to local residents, the road was further damaged by heavy flooding due to continuous rains in early July.
"About half of the road has been damaged by water erosion. This road reaches Maungdaw town. Bangladeshi goods are also imported through this road. The damage to this road has caused many difficulties for the locals," a local man told DMG.
The road is primarily used by locals from the villages of Kinchaung, Thayay Konbaung, Du Nyaungbingyi, Khaing Gyi, Padin and Cheeyartan in southern Maungdaw Township.
Currently, the road is damaged and locals are forced to clear forest paths to travel.
"This road is located west of Kinchaung Village and about 150 vehicles, including motorbikes and three-wheeled motorbikes, use it every day. Now, this road is no longer usable. The road is in disrepair and the locals have to clear the forest for forest routes to travel," said a local man.
The past few days have also seen heavy rain and flooding, which has reportedly damaged some bridges along the road.
When the road was damaged, the Arakan Army (AA) and United League of Arakan (ULA) worked together to make it easier for locals to travel, but according to locals, the road was further damaged due to the heavy water flows of recent days.
"This road is located in the southern part of Maungdaw. This road is the main route for goods entering Maungdaw from the sea. Now locals want ULA to rebuild this road as soon as possible," said a local resident in Maungdaw.
Since early July, heavy rains in Arakan State have caused flooding, damaging roads, bridges, and paddy fields.
