The United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA) is building new inter-village roads in Paletwa Township, Chin State, projects that local residents say are vital for rural development, including social, health and economic needs.

The ULA/AA began the construction in October to link villages in Paletwa Township by land, and is also working to create a direct route to neighbouring Mizoram State in India.

A resident of Kuntaung Village said: “The Arakan Army has been building a road in the Kalatchaung area since October. At present, the road is just a dirt road, but I heard that it will open to traffic in December. In our area, water transport is convenient only during the rainy season. In summer, there is no water and travel is difficult. Now that the road is being built, it will greatly benefit transportation in the region.”

The road under construction runs from Setpyitpyin Village in Paletwa Township to Mizoram State, and is expected to significantly support India-Arakan trade.

An Arakanese trader said the new route would be important for cross-border commerce and could speed up the movement of goods.

“The ULA is constructing a road connecting Paletwa and Mizoram State. It is learnt that it will be possible to reach Lawngtlai Township through this road. If this road is allowed for trade, it will speed up the flow of goods compared to the current sea route,” the trader said.

In addition to the ULA/AA, the Maraland Territorial Council (MTC)/Mara Defence Force (MDF) is also building a road from Para Village near Siaha District in Mizoram to Paletwa Township.

Following the Arakan Army’s offensive for control of towns in Arakan State, the India-Arakan trade route reopened, boosting transportation and positioning Paletwa Township as a major economic hub.
