Several civilians were killed in two junta bombing raids on Nyaung Kan Village in Arakan State’s Myebon Township on Friday, said residents.
The regime bombed the village on March 22 at noon, followed by another bombing raid in the evening. The village monastery and some houses were destroyed in ensuing fires, said residents.
“The bombs were dropped near the monastery. Many people were injured,” said a resident.
Nearly 20 civilians were reportedly killed, and at least 40 were injured. DMG could not independently verify those reports.
Among the injured were reportedly residents of nearby villages who were taking shelter in Nyaung Kan Village. The injured civilians were taken to a safe place for medical treatment, said residents.
Nyaung Kan is a relatively large village, home to nearly 2,000 people across more than 300 households.
Residents said the regime intentionally bombed their village despite there being no fighting in the area.
“There was no fighting near our villages or nearby villages. But they bombed us twice. They are deliberately killing us,” said one resident.
Five civilians, including children, were killed and nine were injured when the regime carried out a bombing raid on Ahtet Lay Nyin Taung Village in Lay Myo Chaung area in Mrauk-U Township on Thursday.
Civilians are being killed or injured daily in Arakan State by junta air raids targeting residential areas as the regime loses ground in the fighting with the Arakan Army (AA).
