The junta’s transport and communications ministry is planning to increase vehicle registration fees by a factor of three.
The head office of the road transportation administration department in Naypyitaw on September 8 notified departments in their respective regions and states to calculate new rates for vehicle registration fees and send their feedback by September 13. The stated purpose of the proposed increase is “to make sure there is no loss of state revenues.”
The current rates are outdated while salaries have increased, the number of vehicles on Myanmar’s streets has surged and the value of vehicles has increased, the notice said in explaining the reasoning behind the proposed increase.
Ko Hlaing Oo Maw from Mandalay said: “It is unacceptable to increase vehicle registration renewal fees by three times while people are having a hard time. It amounts to putting a burden on people.”
The increase in vehicle registration renewal fees mean municipal taxes and wheel taxes will also increase for vehicles.
“The registration fee is charged according to the capacity of the engine. [The regime] is squeezing every walk of life,” said Yangon resident Ma Kyaw Hsu Mon.
The last time vehicle registration fees were increased was five years ago, in 2018.
The registration fees will increase from the previous range of 2,000-6,000 kyats to 6,000-20,000 kyats for motorbikes and three-wheel motorbikes; from the previous range of 5,000-15,000 kyats to 20,000 to 50,000 kyats for smaller private vehicles; from 10,000-30,000 kyats to 80,000-100,000 kyats for smaller rental vehicles; from 10,000-30,000 kyats to 80,000-100,000 kyats for larger private vehicles; and from 20,000-40,000 kyats to 90,000-150,000 kyats for larger rental vehicles.
The regime also plans to increase vehicle inspection fees by 30,000 kyats depending on the type of vehicle.
