Heavy rain is predicted in Arakan State for the next three days due to a low pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) reported.
The depression is likely to develop into a cyclonic storm on Saturday, and a severe cyclonic storm on Sunday morning as it moves toward Bangladesh, according to the department.
The department has warned of heavy rainfall with strong winds across Myanmar between May 24-27, and squally weather along and off the Arakan coast, with high tides.
Internally displaced people (IDPs) living in makeshift, often flimsy shelters have expressed concerns for their safety.
“We have heard about the storm, and we are worried. We are living in makeshift tents made out of tarpaulin sheets. The tents can’t withstand the heavy rain. Children and elderly persons are at greater risk in particular,” said an IDP.
Many people in Arakan State have yet to recover from the impacts of Cyclone Mocha, which caused serious damage in many parts of Arakan State in May of last year.
