The Arakan Army (AA) has been launching attacks on junta bases and military camps in Maungdaw District, Arakan State, with the regime responding using joint army and air forces.
The AA clashed with a 50-strong military contingent from the junta’s Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 234 on the Buthidaung-Maungdaw road about four kilometres south of Kyaukphyutaung Village in Buthidaung Township on March 25.
Eight junta soldiers were killed during the fighting, the AA said in a statement on March 28. The ethnic Arakanese armed group also seized the Taung Bazaar military camp in Buthidaung Township on March 25, the statement added.
The AA is stepping up attacks on the Kyeinchaing military camp in Maungdaw Township. The military has been responding to the AA’s offensive with joint army, navy and air forces since the end of February to prevent the ethnic armed group from seizing the Kyeinchaing outpost.
It has been nearly one month since the AA launched an offensive attack on the Kyeinchaing military camp.
The AA has been beefing up attacks on these junta bases, military camps and border guard force outposts in an effort to ultimately gain control of the entire Maungdaw region.
The AA has so far seized the Yanaungmyin military camp and Tamanthar BGF outpost in Maungdaw Township and LIB No. 552 in Buthidaung Township.
The AA has seized large swaths of territory in Rathedaung, Pauktaw, Ponnagyun, Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, Minbya, Myebon and Ramree townships, as well as in neighbouring Paletwa Township, Chin State, since launching an offensive in November of last year.
Clashes between the military and AA are reported in Ann, where the military’s Western Command headquarters is located, and military tensions between the two sides are running high in Kyaukphyu.
