Myanmar’s military regime has blockaded the main coastal route used by Thandwe Township residents to flee ongoing fighting and receive healthcare services in Thandwe Town as of Monday.
The route is mainly used by residents of villages along Thandwe-Taungup road including the Shwe Hlay neighbourhood, where the regime and the Arakkha Army (AA) are fighting fiercely, to flee to Thandwe Town, as well as to send civilians injured by junta artillery strikes to the hospital there.
“The regime blockaded the Kinmaw-Sinkaung waterway yesterday. Motorboats coming from Sinkaung were turned back by junta soldiers this morning. The blockade is targeted at displaced people, and people seeking medical treatment,” said a resident of Kinmaw Village.
Thousands of displaced people who have fled the fighting are stranded in local villages as they can’t proceed to Thandwe Town.
Fighting has been raging in Thandwe Township since April 13. More than 20 civilians were killed and many more injured in junta air and artillery strikes during the fighting.
More than 20,000 people have been displaced since the fighting began, and their need for food and pharmaceuticals is increasing daily.
