The body of a woman who fell into a river after being struck by lightning in Ann Township, Arakan State, was recovered at around 11 a.m. on May 4, family members told DMG.
The deceased, identified as 40-year-old Daw Thein Khin Kyi from Taung Shay village, was returning from a funeral by boat with four family members on Tuesday afternoon when she was struck by lightning between Myebon and Ann townships.
Her lifeless body was discovered near Thalumaw village on Wednesday, according to family member U Ko Ko Win.
The family was caught in a thunderstorm after their boat broke down on the way home from Kyauk Phyar village, and a bolt of lightning struck the woman, he said, adding that both Daw Thein Khin Kyi and her son fell into the river but the latter was unharmed.
The body was taken to Taung Shay village and a date for her funeral is not yet known, the family member said.
An official from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology told DMG that the current pre-monsoon period until the onset of the rainy season in earnest could still bring occasional high winds, thunderstorms and hail.
Two out of four family members from Ywar Shay village in Thandwe Township, Arakan State were killed by a lightning strike in October of last year.
