Dozens of homes and fishing sheds were destroyed by heavy rains and rising tides in Mon State’s Ye and Thanbyuzayat townships on September 30, and about 120 people are in need of emergency assistance, according to local residents.
Heavy rains, strong winds, and high waves caused at least 10 homes and 20 fishing sheds to collapse in Autseik Village on Kalaroak Island, Ye Township, on the morning of September 30, villagers said.
“Sea waves triggered by heavy rains and gusty winds caused about 10 homes and 20 fish sheds near the beach to collapse,” said a local man from Autseik Village.
The inclement conditions also damaged 24 homes near the seashore and some retaining walls on the Setse Beach in Daminseik Village, Thanbyuzayat Township.
“Heavy rains and gusty winds caused several homes belonging to local fishermen and some retaining walls on the Setse Beach to collapse,” said a local woman from Daminseik Village.
As many as 120 local people in Ye and Thanbyuzayat townships were forced to move to nearby monasteries or relatives’ homes, and they are reportedly in need of clothing and food items.
“Some people take refuge at the monasteries while some stay at their relatives’ homes. Around 100 people taking shelter at the monasteries are in need of clothes and food supplies,” said an official from a Thanbyuzayat Township social organisation.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) announced on October 2 that monsoon winds are strong in the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Over the next two days, strong winds may occur along the coast of Myanmar, with surface winds gusting up to 30-35 miles per hour.
The DMH has warned that areas bordering the sea coast, such as Yangon, Ayeyarwaddy and Tanintharyi regions, and Arakan and Mon states, may experience heavy rain.
