A woman who had tested positive for Covid-19 delivered a baby on Wednesday at Kyaukphyu District General Hospital and later died, said the Lay Waddy Kula Rekhita charity group in Kyaukphyu town.
The 33-year-old was admitted to the district hospital to deliver her baby four days ago, but was transferred to the Covid-19 treatment ward after she tested positive for the virus.
She delivered her baby in an emergency surgical procedure on August 4 and died that night, said Ko Japan Gyi, chair of the Lay Waddy Kula Rekhita organisation.
“She wanted to deliver a baby. And, her oxygen level was lowered. So, she gave birth by C-section in the emergency ward,” he said.
DMG sought comment from officials at the district hospital but was unsuccessful.
The newborn is in good health, aid workers said.
On Friday morning, an elderly woman in Kyaukphyu Township who felt short of breath died on the way to hospital, said Ko Japan Gyi.
“This morning, we were told an old woman felt short of breath. So, we were going to admit her to the hospital, but she was found dead when we arrived at the hospital,” he said, adding that a post-mortem test came back positive for Covid-19.
On July 27, a pregnant woman from Maungdaw Township tested positive for Covid-19 when she was admitted to the hospital to deliver a baby. The baby was likewise delivered via emergency C-section, and the mother also died with Covid-19.
As of August 5,352 cases and 22 deaths were reported in Kyaukphyu Township, according to the Arakan State Department of Public Health.
There have been 3,111 cases and 256 deaths, with 716 patients being provided medical treatment at hospitals in Arakan State, during the pandemic’s ongoing third wave.
