According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH), a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal may enter Bangladesh and northern Arakan State this week, bringing inclement weather and strong winds.

U Hla Tun, director of the DMH, told DMG that the depression has developed into a cyclone, moving northeast.

“The deep depression is likely to become a strong cyclone and is now moving northeast and may enter Bangladesh. That deep depression will roughly enter Bangladesh, which is adjacent to northern Arakan State,” he said.

He added that onshore and offshore fishing boats, ferry boats and ships in Arakan State and off its coast should exercise caution.

“If there is a storm, the main impact is likely to be in northern Arakan. If there is a storm, there will be heavy rain and strong [wind and] waves from the sea,” he said.

Meteorologist U Win Naing predicted that from the evening of October 24, the storm will cross the coast of Bangladesh, and from October 24-26, heavy rains, strong winds, flooding and landslides may occur in Arakan State.

Wind gusts of more than 50 miles per hour are predicted, along with rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches in Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu, Sittwe, Phayonekar Island, Myebon, Mrauk-U, Kyauktaw, Rathedaung and Buthidaung townships.
