An elderly man was injured in a junta drone attack in Sanae town, part of Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu Township, on Monday evening, according to local residents.
U Maung Kyaw Hla, in his 70s, sustained injuries to his torso and arms when the junta used a drone to drop four bombs on Sanae Town and nearby villages at around 2:30 p.m. on May 20. U Maung Kyaw Hla was wounded in the drone attack while he was at a monastery in Myawchaung Village.
“The junta launched several drone attacks yesterday. The junta used a drone to drop four bombs on Sanae Town and nearby areas yesterday evening, wounding an elderly man,” said a local resident.
The regime carried out drone attacks on Ywahaungtaw, Pyaineseiktaung and Myawchaung villages without any fighting in the area, damaging a village monastery.
On the morning of May 8, a junta drone attack on a bazaar in Sanae Town killed a local woman, wounded three others and destroyed seven market stalls.
“The regime is attacking Sanae Town with great malice. The regime often targets markets and religious buildings where there are many civilians, so local people no longer dare to go to monasteries and markets,” said another Sanae resident.
The military regime, which has faced defeat after military defeat in Arakan State, has been criticised by human rights activists for the increasing number of targeted attacks on civilians with airstrikes and other heavy weapons.
The military clashed with the Arakkha Army (AA) near the junta’s Taungmawoo naval base, about three miles from Sanae Town, in December.
