At least 1,000 local people were reportedly displaced by fighting between the military and Arakkha Army (AA) in Thandwe Township, Arakan State.

Fierce clashes between the military and AA have been reported near Yaykauk, Purit and Dawmya villages in the northern part of Thandwe Township since 11 a.m. on April 22, with the regime using its army, navy and air forces to respond to the AA’s attack, locals said.

“The fighting lasted for about 10 hours from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. yesterday. The regime used its army, navy and air force to respond to the AA’s attack and carried out airstrikes four times,” said a displaced person.

The Myanmar Navy’s artillery strikes forced as many as 1,000 local people to flee to nearby villages, monasteries and their relatives’ homes on Tuesday.

The clash broke out at a location about 22 miles from Thandwe and 12 miles from the Thu Htay Chaung hydropower project.

The junta blocked off the Thandwe-Taungup road after the military clashed with the AA at a location between Kwaychaung and Yaysin villages in Thandwe Township, Arakan State, at about 5 a.m. on April 13.

“The regime has tightened security following the fighting in Thandwe. Locals are not allowed to go to the places where they once traveled freely. Locals in Thandwe are worried about their security as they have never experienced such clashes,” said a resident in Thandwe.

A driver was killed and three other people were injured as junta soldiers opened fire on a civilian vehicle on the Thandwe-Taungup road on Monday.
