Fighting between the Myanmar military and Arakkha Army (AA) continues to escalate in Thandwe Township, Arakan State, where two civilians were injured in a junta shelling on July 9.
An artillery shell fired by junta troops stationed on a hilltop camp fell and exploded in Nyaungpin bazaar in Thandwe Township on Tuesday, wounding a local man and woman.
“The regime fired three mortar shells. One shell landed in Dwaryarwady Myothit while another shell fell in a location outside of Thandwe. An artillery shell landed and exploded in a local bazaar, wounding a couple. The woman was severely injured in the artillery strike and her husband sustained shrapnel wounds to his legs,” said a local woman.
Some 1,000 residents are trapped in Thandwe Town as the military regime has prevented them from fleeing ongoing fighting there.
“Clashes between the military and AA are reported daily. The junta jet fighters drop bombs and Myanmar Navy vessels fire mortar shells. Residents in downtown Thandwe are worried about their safety. The junta has barred residents in Thandwe from fleeing the ongoing fighting,” said a local man in Thandwe.
A junta airstrike on Myonepyin Village, Thandwe Township, reportedly injured four local women and a 14-year-old girl on July 2.
Fighting has been raging in Thandwe Township for more than two months, since the AA launched an assault on junta positions in the township on April 13. Civilian casualties have surpassed 130 due to the regime’s airstrikes and artillery attacks in Thandwe Township.
The AA has seized the military’s Ngapali-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 566 and Thandwe Airport, and continues an assault on Light Infantry Battalion No. 55.
