Families of victims of the Mrauk-U Hospital bombing have called for international sanctions against Myanmar’s military regime over what they describe as mass killings of civilians.

A relative of one victim said international organisations must take effective action and hold the regime accountable.

“I want the international community to take action against the bombing of a hospital where medical treatment is being provided. I want the military to pay for the unjust killing of local people in Arakan State. I want the world to know about the mass killings by the military regime, and I want the United Nations to take action. I want to ask why the military regime is not taking action — is it encouraging people to kill?” said Daw Hla Nu May, a family member of one of the deceased.

At around 9 p.m. on December 10, International Human Rights Day, the military dropped two 500-pound bombs on Mrauk-U Hospital, killing 33 people — including children and health workers — and injuring 76 others, with many still missing.

The Arakan Army described the targeted bombing of a hospital treating civilians as the “worst and most serious war crime.”

Civilian casualties have continued to rise as the military regime has carried out indiscriminate attacks on homes, and educational, medical, and religious facilities.

“I want the international community to recognize that we are being bombed like this. I want everyone to know that the military is committing atrocities. I don’t want this to happen to anyone again. I don’t want anyone to lose anything,” said Ma Hnin Moe Nwe, a family member of a victim from Waithali Village, Mrauk-U Township.

ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) has condemned the Mrauk-U Hospital bombing as a brutal act of mass killing.

UN human rights chief Volker Türk has also called for an investigation, describing the attack as a war crime and urging accountability.

Muslim elders have urged the international community to take immediate action against the military regime over the bombing and mass killings at Mrauk-U Hospital.

“Now, all the people receiving medical treatment are Arakanese, Chin and Muslims. Many patients are waiting. We are not happy and do not want the military regime to bomb this place. We also have a lot to report to international organisations. We want them to take specific and immediate action,” said U Thein Shwe, a Muslim elder from Pipinyin Village in Mrauk-U Township.

Customary international humanitarian law prohibits attacks on religious, educational and medical facilities during armed conflict, and requires protection for civilians not taking part in hostilities.

Despite this, the military regime continues to carry out airstrikes across the country, killing civilians and committing human rights violations.

The regime reportedly bombed Ngalonesu Village in Kyaukphyu Township at around 7 p.m. on December 11, killing eight internally displaced persons (IDPs) and local residents, and injuring at least 10 others.
