The National League for Democracy (NLD) has won all constituencies in Gwa Township, Arakan State, where incumbent Chief Minister U Nyi Pu was among the contestants for a seat, according to polling station representatives of the ruling party.

The NLD is currently leading decisively in all four constituencies up for grabs in Gwa — its Lower House and Upper House races, and the Arakan State Hluttaw constituency Nos. 1 and 2 for the township, according to U Yan Aung Soe, an NLD polling station representative. The latter seat in the state legislature was contested by the sitting chief minister, an NLD candidate.

“With more than half of the voting results counted, the NLD has won a landslide victory. Votes are still being counted … What we can say now is that the other parties are sharing half of the vote. Therefore, the NLD is leading the constituencies when compared to other political parties,” U Yan Aung Soe told DMG.

The township election subcommission has not yet released official voting results, but U Myint Tin, an Arakan National Party (ANP) candidate for Gwa’s Arakan State assembly constituency No. 1, conceded that the ruling NLD looked headed for victory.

“The NLD won in all four constituencies in Gwa Township. The ANP lost by a wide margin,” he said.

There were a total of 135 polling stations set up on Sunday for the 53,480 eligible voters across Gwa Township’s 39 village-tracts.

Candidates from the NLD, ANP, Union Solidarity and Development Party, Union Betterment Party and Arakan League for Democracy, as well as some independents, contested seats in Gwa Township this year.

The NLD also won all four constituencies in Gwa Township in the 2015 general election. As yet, there have been no official election results provided by the Union Election Commission (UEC), with statements from the respective political parties providing the best early indications of election outcomes.
