Two internally displaced people (IDPs) were killed and three others including a child were injured in a junta artillery strike on Zedipyin displacement camp in Rathedaung Township, Arakan State, on Tuesday morning, according to local residents.
Two mortar shells fired by the military’s Shwe Min Gan naval base in Sittwe fell and exploded in the Zedipyin IDP camp at around 7 a.m. on May 21.
“Mortar shells, which directly hit the displacement camp, are believed to have been fired by the Myanmar Navy. An IDP was killed on the spot and another IDP died on the way to the hospital,” said a source.
The injured are being treated at a nearby hospital and they are said to be in critical condition.
“I heard the sound of heavy weapons in the morning. Two mortar shells landed and exploded in Zedipyin Village, causing some civilian casualties. Locals are afraid for their safety following the junta shelling,” said a local resident of Ywathitkay Village.
Junta navy ships docked at Shwe Min Gan Jetty in Sittwe fired at least five mortar shells on Tuesday morning, according to residents.
Myanmar’s military regime, which has faced defeat after military defeat in Arakan State, is increasingly targeting towns and villages, causing civilian casualties to rise steadily in recent months.
