Junta troops raided Shauk Chaung Village in Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu Township on Saturday morning, prompting villagers to flee.
At least 30 junta soldiers from the Danyawaddy naval base based in Kyaukphyu fired warning shots in the air after villagers began to flee, said residents.
“People fled in fear when they [junta troops] entered the village. They fired around six shots to stop people from running. People who remained in the village were taken to the school and asked if the Arakkh Army (AA) troops had entered the village. They beat two villagers,” said a resident.
The two men reportedly beaten by junta soldiers had to receive medical treatment, according to residents.
Junta troops left after questioning some villagers, but male villagers are not yet going back home, said another resident.
“Men are still in hiding. Junta soldiers mainly target men, so male villagers have concerns,” he said.
Residents are living in fear in Kyaukphyu Township as they are also subject to random checks by regime personnel, including soldiers.
Residents from around 30 villages in Kyaukphyu Townships have fled their homes due to the junta’s raids and artillery strikes.
The Danyawaddy naval base, three junta battalions and one police battalion are based in Kyaukphyu Township, which is increasingly surrounded by the advancing AA.
