One man was killed and three other people, including children, were wounded when artillery shells fired by junta troops fell on Hsaungdula village in Kayah State’s Demoso Township on Friday night, according to locals.
“The Myanmar military’s Ngwetaung village-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 102 fired at least 10 artillery shells into the village. Some homes in the village were hit by artillery shells and casualties were reported in the shelling,” said a resident of Hsaungdula village.
U Ko Yee, 54, was identified as the fatality, and three others ranging in age from 5 to 18 years old sustained injuries in the bombardment, according to a member of the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF) coalition.
“The junta troops indiscriminately fired heavy weapons into the village. The deceased and injured are from the same family,” said a health worker who provides healthcare services to internally displaced people (IDPs).
More than 1,000 locals from Hsaungdula village-tract have fled to nearby displacement camps and some villages, where they are facing food and shelter shortages, according to aid workers.
The military council has not yet commented on the civilian casualties in Demoso Township.
At least 108 people have been killed or wounded in heavy artillery shelling by the military junta in Demoso Township, according to the Karenni Human Rights Group.
