A junta column stationed in Saw Town, Magway Region, has reportedly been breaking into homes and stealing residents’ property, vehicles and other belongings, according to local sources.
A 200-strong junta contingent entered the town on 31 May and is currently breaking into vacant houses to take valuable items.
“Ever since the junta column arrived, they have been taking cars and motorcycles. Then, they loaded pillows, snacks and sacks of salt onto vehicles and took them away. They are not breaking through the front doors, but are smashing the back doors of houses to take things,” a resident of Saw told DMG.
On 1 June, a Y-8 transport aircraft from Meiktila Airbase dropped supplies by parachute into Saw Town.
The parachuted packages reportedly landed on residential houses, and when junta soldiers came to retrieve them, they seized cars, motorcycles and sidecar motorcycles to transport the supplies.
“The packages dropped by parachute landed on houses, so they came to collect them. Because they could not carry everything, they transported the supplies using motorcycles and sidecar motorcycles. A motorcycle from our house and a sidecar from another house were taken,” another local resident said.
A junta column that advanced into Saw Town on 14 May reportedly arrested civilians, killed some residents and extorted money from local people.
The junta troops currently occupying Saw Town have established a base there and are reportedly serving as a rear force to assemble and reinforce troops involved in operations in Kanpetlet.
Residents said they are waiting to see whether the junta troops will remain in Saw Town or continue toward Kanpetlet. Meanwhile, many local residents have fled to safer areas due to the ongoing conflict.
The regime force currently stationed in Saw Town was part of a 500-strong contingent that departed from Kyaukhtu-based Artillery Battalion No. 368 on 28 May.
The troops reportedly deployed reinforcements in villages along the Saw-Kangyi Road before advancing into Saw Town with about 200 soldiers.
