Five civilians were killed and 10 others injured by junta air and artillery strikes in Arakan State in the two days from January 15-16 as fighting escalated between junta troops and the Arakan Army (AA).
Among the five civilians killed was one in Sittwe, and two each in Buthidaung and Mrauk-U. Five civilians were injured in Sittwe, two in Buthidaung and one each in Sittwe, Kyauktaw and Minbya.
One civilian was killed and another injured in Warr Bo Village in Sittwe Township on Tuesday evening after a shell fired by a junta battalion hit the village.
“It seems as if people had to stay in air raid shelters. Even if there is no fighting, the military is bombarding villages, which seriously disrupts our livelihoods,” said a resident of Warr Bo Village.
Most Warr Bo villagers have fled following the fatal artillery strike.
Two men aged 45 and 55 were killed in Myaung Bwe Village, Mrauk-U Township, on Monday in a junta bombing raid. A 30-year-old man, a 70-year-old woman and a pregnant woman were seriously injured.
“A jet fighter came and carried out four attacks. Villagers were caught off guard,” said a resident of Myaung Bwe Village.
More than 300 civilians have been killed by the junta’s deliberate attacks since renewed fighting broke out between the two sides in November.
