Myanmar’s military regime has reportedly been conducting airstrikes on Kyeintali, a town in Arakan State’s Gwa Township currently held by the Arakkha Army (AA).
“The regime has launched a counteroffensive attack on the AA. Hundreds of homes, buildings and shops were destroyed by the regime airstrikes and artillery attacks. Some local residents reportedly remain in Kyeintali Town. I don’t know whether civilian casualties have been reported or not,” said a resident of Gwa.
Some people are stranded in Kyeintali and the AA is still unable to rescue those stranded due to the regime’s airstrikes, according to aid workers.
At least 11 civilians including two children were killed and 11 others were injured in a junta airstrike on Kyeintali Town on August 15.
“Innocent civilians are dying because of the regime’s stupid actions. We strongly protest the actions of the regime,” said a social activist.
No clashes have been reported in Kyeintali since dozens of junta soldiers retreated from the town on August 13 and took positions in Kalarpyin Village amid an AA offensive targeting the town.
Military tensions between the military and AA are running high following a clash between the two sides near Kalarpyin Village on the Kyeintali-Gwa road.
The regime has boosted its defences in Gwa, where two junta battalions — Light Infantry Battalion Nos. 562 and 563 — are based, and has reportedly brought in reinforcements from Ayeyarwady Region.
