Two policemen from Kyauknimaw police outpost in Arakan State’s Ramree Township were arrested by a group of seven people at around 12 noon on June 22, according to local police.
The two detainees have been identified as Tun Lin Aung, a police lance corporal, and Pyae Sone Aung, a police constable. They were arrested on their way back from Ramree at a jetty in Thinganak village, according to a police officer on-duty from the Kyauknimaw police station.
“Two policemen returned to Ramree from Kyauknimaw village for a case. They had to ride a boat at a jetty in Thinganak village to return to Honewa village. They were arrested while waiting for the boat operator,” the police officer explained.
The police officer continued that he was not clear on which group had arrested them, and that no group had so far claimed responsibility for the arrest.
The two policemen are from Naypyidaw and Natmauk, and they had only been on duty at the Kyauknimaw police outpost for a few months.
A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he feared the Myanmar military would arrest locals like those in Mrauk-U, Ponnagyun and Kyauktaw following the detention of the two policemen.
“I heard two policemen were arrested. Locals are worried that there will be retaliatory arrests by the Myanmar military and Arakan Army like in northern Arakan State,” the unnamed resident added.
The Arakan Army has detained some junta soldiers and policemen in Ponnagyun, Kyauktaw and Mrauk-U townships in recent days. In response to the Arakan Army’s detention of junta soldiers and policemen, the Myanmar military has arrested dozens of civilians in some Arakan State townships.
