Ko Tin Tun Aung, a local man from Paletwa Township, Chin State, who was detained by the Myanmar military and is facing incitement charges, appeared before the township court on Thursday, and the plaintiff and prosecution witnesses were reportedly examined by the court.
The court examined Captain Tun Tun Naing, the plaintiff from the Myanmar military, and two village administrators who are prosecution witnesses, and scheduled the next hearing for February 23, according to family members of the defendant.
“The court questioned Captain Tun Tun Naing, a military officer from the Myanmar military’s LIB [Light Infantry Battalion] 289 and two prosecution witnesses during today’s hearing,” one of Ko Tin Tun Aung’s family members told DMG.
Ko Tin Tun Aung was arrested on December 28 and faces charges under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code, after telling the Arakan State-based media outlet Western News that a white flag had been seen flying on a hill where a military battalion was stationed in Paletwa Township.
“He [Ko Tin Tun Aung] should be released. What he said was similar to what people heard in Paletwa town,” the family member added. “One of two detainees has already been released. What he said did not discredit the State. People in Paletwa town did not flee because of the flag hoisting.”
