A junta artillery strike on Mose Island’s Sarpyingyi Village, in Arakan State’s Rathedaung Township, killed two civilians and injured four others including two children on Wednesday.
Civilian casualties were reported after an artillery shell fired by the Myanmar Navy in Sittwe fell and exploded in Sarpyingyi Village on August 28.
“Locals were sleeping when a mortar shell landed and exploded in the village at around 11 p.m. Two people were killed on the spot and four others were wounded in the regime shelling,” said a resident of Rathedaung.
The deceased have been identified as U Aung Myo Tun, 38, and Maung Hlaing Ko Tun, 16. Daw Hlaing Hlaing Win, 36, Daw Ma Shwe Than, 40, and a 6-year-old girl and 5-year old boy sustained injuries in the junta artillery attack.
The injured are receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital and the 5-year-old boy sustained severe injuries and his condition is considered life-threatening.
Many locals have fled to locations deemed safer following the civilian casualties in the regime artillery strike.
“We dare not stay in the village due to the regime artillery assaults. Locals were afraid for their safety following civilian casualties in the regime shelling. Most villagers have fled to safer locations,” said a resident of Mose Island.
Two internally displaced people (IDPs) were killed and three others including a child were injured in a junta artillery strike fired from the military’s Shwe Min Gan naval base in Sittwe on the Zedipyin displacement camp in Rathedaung Township on the morning of May 21.
Civilian casualties continue to rise due to the regime’s airstrikes and artillery attacks on civilian areas in Arakan State.
“The regime’s reckless killing of civilians by the law of war is a very despicable act,” said a human rights activist.
